Mary's Story
Mary who is a single mother heard about Drive Ahead through a local mother and toddler group. Having not worked for five years she began to feel that she would never have a job or learn a new skill. Her confidence was rock bottom and as a young girl she wanted to make changes that would help her to create a better life for herself and her daughter.
When Mary attended the Drive Ahead interview she was very nervous but some how the staff made her feel so relaxed and at ease that she was able to talk about her motivations and hopes for the future. She was delighted to discover that her interview had won her a place on the next Drive Ahead course.
At Drive Ahead Mary got practical qualifications including a fork lift driving licence and a first aid certificate. She learned how to make her CV and to talk to employers about her skills and experience. She is now going on to take her telescopic forklift test and is also seeking employment. She loves forklift driving and acknowledges that she never would have thought about doing it were it not for Drive Ahead.
Above all, from her experience at Drive Ahead Mary believes the greatest progress she made was with her own self-confidence. She learnt how to stand up for herself and to say what she believed. She also started to believe in herself and to change her thinking that she couldn’t do things and go to see and believe that she can.
