Back Lane Hostel

Back Lane hostel is a 60 bed service with a well-deserved reputation for providing good quality accommodation, food and support for homeless men in Dublin. The project is managed by Depaul Ireland in partnership with the St Vincent de Paul Society in Dublin. Over its 85-year history the project has responded to the changing climate of the accommodation need of Dubliners.

PROJECT AIMS

  • To provide an emergency 24/7 hostel for 60 homeless men with medium support needs;
  • To provide access to welfare rights advice, health care and other specialist services, both at the Project and at other services in the community;
  • To operate a high quality accommodation project that meet the basic needs of the client group;
  • To identify move-on opportunities for the client group using Keyworking and case management.

FACILITIES AND SERVICES

The project provides direct access, emergency and short-term accommodation on a six months basis, for 60 single homeless men. In 2011, thanks to the support of the Society of St. Vincent Depaul, 18 rooms were modernised to improve the standard of accommodation making them more suitable for men who have become longer term service users.

Two rooms are fully wheelchair accessible and all bedrooms are single with washbasin and all service users have access to bathroom and shower facilities. At Back Lane the men also have access to a communal pool and snooker room, library and television lounge.

During their stay, all residents are appointed with a Key Worker to ensure they can access all the services they require and recieve the appropriate support. A care plan is developed between the Service Users and worker, which is monitored and reviewed. The care plan covers life skills, budgeting, drink harm reduction, detox access and health and mental health support. Health support is provided through Depaul Ireland Nurse Manager and visiting GP services. There is specialist support worker engaging with those people with mental health issues.

All residents are given assistance on resettlement and support following their move on.

Target GROUP

Single homeless men over the age of 18 with low/ medium support needs. The Project will accept people with alcohol, drug and mental health issues.
